Headquarters for the television station ARTE (Strasbourg, France)

The elaboration of the concept for Arte’s headquarters goes beyond responding to purely functional requirements. It is about defining a space able to reflect this new cultural dimension, resulting from both the confrontation and symbiosis of French and German cultures. The project was moulded in view of this new European horizon. It stands as a witness to this cultural diversity combining two unique entities in a stable and knowing balance.
The proposal is both rich and complex volumetrically, while straightforward in its architectural language. The programmatic elements are organised as a number of independent blocks, interconnected by interstitial spaces, places of transit and chance encounters.
The studios consist of double or triple height volumes, whilst the programmatic elements, grouped floor by floor, establish a more linear series of spaces. The building’s different “populations” thereby assert their existence and autonomy, while maintaining a close relationship with each other.
The architecture is devised as an assemblage, a compression of metal volumes between which circulation and meeting spaces are set.
