Offices and Apartment Building (Vienna, Austria)

Situated in Vienna’s 20th district, this office building is comprised of two main volumes connected by a glass facade and a spacious reception hall. The two volumes are designed as large “stones”, punctured by a number of bays, which appear to follow an irregular grid. The windows, all set at a slight angle when compared to the facade, reflect the surroundings in a particular way, and incorporate solar protective elements, and occasional balconies. This heavy, thick facade, contrasts the lighter, glazed volumes, printed with foliage motifs are set within the “stones”. The top floor, the roof terrace, accommodates lightweight timber structures. The ground floor, intended to house shop spaces, is enclosed by a slightly undulating glass facade. The building is designed so as to provide a certain programmatic flexibility: office spaces or housing units of varying size. It aims to minimise energy consumption: the spaces benefit from a natural ventilation completed in the summer by the circulation of air through the floor spaces. Furthermore rainwater is collected so as to supply a pool situated in the central courtyard.
