Jean Mermoz Private Hospital (Lyon, France)

The project evolved from the meticulous analysis of the program and internal logic required by the brief, which defined the architecture of the proposal and the functional organisation of the building. The hospital building consists of functional units which are both dependent, each one essential to the other, and independent, in terms of their distinct activities and patient-physician relationships. The project also expresses the duality between "High Tech" medicine and the close contact between patients, staff and relatives on a personal level. Therefore the proposal consists of a succession of layers: each level is assigned a function, its own atmosphere and an appropriate architecture. The ground floor, open to the exterior and flooded with light, houses public and circulation spaces. The first floor, the "technology level", defined by the use of high-grade steel, contains the medical equipment. The last level, which accommodates the in-patients, is conceived as interconnecting pavilions relating to the surrounding roof gardens.
