Social Housing (Lyon, France)

Situated between two existing buildings and in alignment with the road, the proposal reinterprets the typology of the traditional workshop-housing unit, typical to Lyon and the “canuts” (silk weavers of the Croix-Rousse district). The street facade, orientated south, consists of a series of tall windows that provide light to the duplexes’ double height living spaces. Natural light and solar gain are controlled by sliding wooden shutters with adjustable slats. To the north the facade overlooking the internal courtyard accommodates the double staircase of the galleries which lead to each apartment. This refers to the famous “Cour des Voraces” well known to the inhabitants of the Croix-Rousse. The top floor, below the pitched roof, houses artists’ studios, orientated north.
